Identifying animals/plants

A child comes to the camp with a different plush toy every day. One day it’s a duck called Toaster.

All week we have been wondering aloud what plant species might be growing in the lush green surroundings of the camping site and hoping that we could recognize them better. I try to identify plants with the PlantNet application on my phone. Once when I was trying to identify some plant species growing in the yard, this child asked if we could try how the application would identify their snake plush toy.

I take a photo of the snake using the plant identifying application, and we get a result based on the colors and shapes of the plush toy. We are thrilled. A plush toy could perhaps be a plant!

Later we try the same with a camp participant’s plush hedgehog. The face of the hedgehog plush toy is too much for the application. We try photographing the back of the plush toy and get a better search result.

Eventually, we try what the application would say about the imaginary plants drawn by the students sitting at the outdoor table.
